George Oppen

American poet (1908-1984), representative of the "Objectivists" school of poets. Politically aware, he left the U.S. for Mexico to avoid persecution by the House Un-American Activities Committee in the 1950s. He returned to America in 1958. In 1969, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
