Ioannis P. Stathopoulos

Graduate of the Hellenic Naval Academy. He served on destroyers, minesweepers, landing ships, and submarines. He participated in the Navy Movement (1973) and was dismissed. After the political changeover, he returned to the Hellenic Navy, promoted to the rank of Commander. Member of Parliament for Laconia with the New Democracy party (1974-1996). Secretary of the Parliament (1976). Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Order (1977-80). Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Committees on National Defense and Internal Affairs (1977-81). Member of the North Atlantic Assembly (1978-1988). Member of the Executive Committee of New Democracy (1981-1983). Deputy Secretary of the New Democracy Parliamentary Group (1986-88 and 1993-96). Chairman of the Economic and Social Committee for Merchant Shipping (1986-87). Chairman of the Economic and Social Committee for National Defense (1989-90). Deputy Minister of National Defense (1991-93).
