
Vasilis Katsaros
Byzantine Scholar - Born in Messolonghi in 1947
Vasilis Katsaros is a Professor of Medieval Greek (Byzantine) Philology at the School of Philosophy. He studied Theology at the School of Theology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.), Philology at the School of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina, and History, Archaeology, and Art at the School of Philosophy of A.U.Th., where he also earned his Ph.D. He has taught as a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Sofia and Cyprus, as well as in postgraduate programs at the Schools of A.U.Th. and the Universities of Ioannina and Athens. He has also collaborated with the Hellenic Open University.
His writing (6 books and over 100 articles) covers topics in Philology, History, Archaeology, Art, and Byzantine Culture. He has actively participated in 65 scientific conferences and symposia. Since 1987, he has been involved in the Scientific Cooperation Program between A.U.Th. and the University of Sofia (special publication series of A.U.Th.). He also participates in special interdisciplinary cooperation programs for the publication of Byzantine Cypriot Texts and in the publishing program "Corpus Fontium Historiae Byzantinae" of the International Association of Byzantine Studies.
He is a co-editor of the scientific journal "Istorikogeografika," a member of the Editorial Board of "Peri Thrakis" (a scientific journal of the Cultural Development Center of Thrace), and Director of the series "Byzantine Writers" by Zitros Publications. He is a member of the "International Scholarly Council" of the "Ivan Dujcev Center for Slavo-Byzantine Studies," a member of the Scientific Committees of the Cultural Studies Center "Saints Cyril and Methodius" of the Cultural Society of Entrepreneurs of Northern Greece, and the Society for the Study and Research of the History of Serres, a regular member of the Archaeological Council of Western Macedonia, a scientific advisor and collaborator of the Center for Speech and Art "Diexodos," and President of the Board of Directors of the "G. and K. Grigoriadis Foundation." He served as a member and President of the Board of Directors of the Folklore and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia and Thrace, Director of the Department of Byzantine Philology of the C.B.E., and a member of the Boards of Directors of the "Society for Byzantine Research" and the "Hellenic Paleographic Society." He served as the director of the department of medieval and modern Greek studies and was elected for a second term as the president of the Department of Philology at A.U.Th.
