Eygenia Drakopoulou

Eugenia Drakopoulou was born in 1959 in Athens. She studied Byzantine and Modern Greek History and Archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens (1982). She continued her postgraduate studies in Byzantine Culture at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris and at the University Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne (D.E.A 1985). In 1991, she received her PhD in History-Archaeology from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens. Since 1985, she has been working at the Institute of Neohellenic Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, and since 1999, she has been responsible for the research project "Greek Painters after the Fall of Constantinople." The aim of the program is to create a comprehensive Archive with biographical information and a complete catalog of works by Greek painters from 1450 to the 19th century. This program, also funded by external sources, has produced four books, a collective volume, articles, scientific announcements, and electronic databases available online. Currently, she is the principal researcher and scientific director of the research program "Religious Art 15th-19th Century." Her main research interests include Byzantine and post-Byzantine archaeology and art, the relations between Orthodox and Western art from the 15th to the 19th century, and Byzantine and post-Byzantine epigraphy, for which she has published books and articles in scientific journals and collective volumes. She has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Crete and the Hellenic Open University, organized and participated with presentations in many Greek and international scientific conferences, and has undertaken the execution of European and Greek research projects.
