Athanasios TH. Fotopoulos

Athanasios Th. Fotopoulos (Pyrgos, Ilia, 1950) studied at the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens. He pursued postgraduate studies at Rand Afrikaans University (Johannesburg) and taught in secondary education as well as in a postgraduate department at the University of Athens. He holds a Ph.D. in history (University of Athens, 1997) and has been teaching modern Greek history at the University of Patras since 2003. Since 1989, he has been publishing the annual international scientific journal Journal of Oriental and African Studies (JOAS). He was awarded by the Academy of Athens in 1980. His research focuses on the history of modern Hellenism. He has published archival sources and studies on historical, philological, folkloric, and bibliographical content. He shows particular interest in identifying and publishing unknown texts/sources of modern Greek history. His major works include: "Historical and Folkloric Studies of the Eastern Region of Aigialeia and Kalavryta" (Vol. A'-B', Athens, 1982), "The Petimezas Family: Collection of Texts and Documents" (Athens, 1987), "The Giatrakos of 1821" (Vol. A'-B', Athens, 2001), "The Contribution of Greeks to Arabic and Islamic Studies from 1453 to the Present" (Athens, 2002).
