Giannis N. Yfantopoulos

Giannis Nikolaou Yfantopoulos is a professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Director of the Department of Administrative Science in the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration. He studied Economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business and pursued further education at the University of York in England, focusing on Public Economics, Welfare Economics, and Health Economics, where he earned his doctoral degree (D. Phil.) in 1980. He has served as a scientific advisor at the Ministry of Health and Welfare and as President of the Red Cross Hospital. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Organization for Medicines (EOF) and the National Organization for Social Care (EOKF). As a visiting professor, he taught health economics and social policy at Clark University (Massachusetts, USA), Tilburg University (Netherlands), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), The Moscow School of Economics (Russia), and the Siberian Academy of Sciences (Russia). He worked as an expert at the European Statistical Office (Eurostat). Additionally, he has served as a special advisor to the World Health Organization and participated in the WHO Advisory Committee on the teaching and research of Health Economics internationally. He has represented Greece in international meetings and missions and participates in scientific programs of the OECD and the European Union. In recent years, he has collaborated with the Directorate-General V of the European Communities for the publication of the Social Situation Report in Europe (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003). His writing activities include books, with the most recent being: "Health Sector Planning in Greece, Economic and Social Dimensions" (Volumes A & B), "Special Topics in Social Policy," "Dimensions of Poverty in Greece" (Volumes A & B), "Blood Donorship and the Challenge of AIDS in Greece, Medical and Economic Aspects," "Social Protection for Dependency in Old Age," "The Social Insurance of TSAY," "Disability and Social Exclusion in the European Union." Finally, his scientific articles and studies have been published in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Romanian, Azerbaijani, and Greek.
