Spyridon Sfetas

Spyridon Sfetas was born in the village of Koilada, Larissa, in 1960. He graduated from the Department of History of the Faculty of Philosophy at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1983. With scholarships initially from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) and later from the German government, he pursued postgraduate studies in the History of Eastern and Southeastern Europe and Slavic Studies at the University of Munich between 1985-1991. In 1991, he was awarded a Doctorate from the University of Munich, with his dissertation focusing on the Macedonian Question. Upon returning to Greece, he completed his military service and in 1993 was appointed as a Scientific Associate at the Institute for Balkan Studies (IMXA). In 1999, he was elected Lecturer of Modern and Contemporary Balkan History in the Department of History and Archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2004, Associate Professor in 2009, and Full Professor in 2017. He has authored numerous studies and articles on Balkan history and current developments and has participated in many conferences in Greece and abroad. He is proficient in English, French, German, Russian, and Balkan languages.
