Paul Veyne

Paul Veyne, a French archaeologist and historian, was born in 1930 in Aix-en-Provence. He studied at the École Normale (1951-1955) and taught at the École Française de Rome (1955-1957) and at the university in his hometown. In 1971, he published his first essay on the epistemology of history, "Comment on écrit l'histoire." From 1975 to 1999, he taught Roman history at the Collège de France, where he remains an emeritus professor. In 1978, his essay "Foucault révolutionne l'histoire" was published, examining the significance of Foucault's work for the science of history (included in "Michel Foucault and the Historians," Nissos 2008). Other significant works include: "Inventaire des différences" (Seuil 1976), "Le Pain et le Cirque" (Seuil 1976; the second part, pages 185-373, has been published in Greek under the title "Greek Benefaction," Zacharopoulos 1993), "Les Grecs ont-ils cru à leurs mythes?" (Seuil 1983; Greek edition: "Did the Greeks Believe in Their Myths?", Zacharopoulos 1993), "La Société romaine" (Seuil 1991), "Les Mystères du gynécée," with F. Frontisi-Ducroux and F. Lissarrague (Gallimard 1998; Greek edition: "The Mysteries of the Gynaeceum," Alexandria 2008), "Sexe et pouvoir à Rome" (Tallandier 2005), "L'Empire gréco-romain" (Seuil 2005), "Quand notre monde est devenu chrétien" (312-394) (Albin Michel 2007; Greek edition: "When Our World Became Christian (312-394)," Estia 2012). In 2012, he published a new translation of Virgil's "Aeneid" (Belles Lettres). In 2014, his autobiography was released by Albin Michel under the title: "Et dans l'éternité je ne m'ennuierai pas. Souvenirs."
