Dimitris Fotiadis

Dimitris Fotiadis (1898-1988). Dimitris Fotiadis, son of landowner and writer Alekos Fotiadis, was born and spent his youth in Smyrna. During the Greco-Turkish War, he served as a volunteer, and after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, he moved to Athens. He worked as an employee at a shipping office in Piraeus while also entering literary and journalistic circles. During the German occupation, he worked as a correspondent in Egypt, London, and the Middle East. During the civil war, he was persecuted and exiled for his leftist political beliefs and later became a member of the Administrative Committee of the United Democratic Left (EDA). From 1936 for five years, he directed the literary magazine "Neoellinika Grammata" and from 1945 to 1948 "Elefthera Grammata." In literature, he mainly focused on theater, officially debuting in 1931 with the award-winning play "Mania Vitrova" in the Kalokairineios dramatic competition, which was performed the following year by Manos Katrakis' People's Theater. In the same year, he was awarded in the Atelier Art Club competition for his one-act play "The Enchanted Violin." His works were also staged by the troupes of Marika Kotopouli and the United Artists, and he was involved in theatrical translation, historiography, and essay writing. He was honored with the Medal of the Society of Greek Studies of the University of Sorbonne (1939) and the State Prize for Biographical Novel (1982 for his work "Enthymimata"). He died in Athens.
