Jacques Bouchard

Jacques Bouchard was born in Quebec in 1940. He studied Classical Philology at Laval University in Quebec. He lived in Greece from 1965 to 1970, specializing in Modern Greek Studies under the guidance of K. Th. Dimaras. During the same period, he attended Modern Greek courses by G. Babiniotis and participated in the activities of the Center for Neohellenic Research at the National Research Center as an independent collaborator. In 1970, he defended his doctoral dissertation on Georgios Tertsetis at the University of Thessaloniki, with G. P. Savvidis as his advisor. He served as a professor of Ancient and Modern Greek at Laval University from 1970 to 1973. Since 1973, he has been a professor of Modern Greek Philology and the director of the Modern Greek Studies Program at the University of Montreal. In 2001, he was elected as the first holder of the F. B. Papachristidis Chair at McGill University and was appointed director of the newly established Interuniversity Center for Neohellenic Studies in Montreal. He is a member of the Academy of Letters and Humanities of the Royal Society of Canada. His main professional interests include the Greek Enlightenment, Greek Surrealism, and literary translation. He has published a critical edition of Nikolaos Mavrocordatos' "Philotheou Parerga" with a French translation, as well as translations of "Ypsikaminos" and "Endochora." Besides translating works by Empeirikos, he has translated into French poets and authors such as M. Sachtouris, N. Engonopoulos, E. Kaknavatos, P. Matesis, among others.
