Louis Coutelle
Louis Coutelle was born in Marseille in 1921, where he received his general education. He studied English at the University of Aix-en-Provence and, after a state examination, was appointed to a high school in Marseille, where he taught English for 18 years. In 1959, a trip to Greece sparked his interest in the modern Greek language. Until then, his connection with Hellenism was limited to his high school studies of ancient Greek.
His initial explorations into Solomos were well-received by Andre Mirambel, the great Philhellene, who facilitated his secondment for a few years at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (C.N.R.S.). The research conducted during this period in Greek and Italian libraries resulted in the present book, which was published in 1977 by Hermes Publishing, under the title: Formation poetique de Solomos (1815-1833). He later taught Greek at the University of Provence for several years.
