Vasilis I. Filias

Vasilis Filias was born in Athens on October 22, 1927. He held a degree from the Law School of the University of Athens, a degree in Theoretical Economics from the University of Munich, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Hamburg. For many years, he served as a professor of sociology at Panteion University, President of the Department of Sociology, and Rector of Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. Additionally, he was the Director of the National Centre for Social Research, President of the Board of Trustees of the National Library of Greece, and Chairman of the Board of Olympic Airways. He co-published the journals "New Economy," "Society and Economy," and "The Socialism of the Future." During the dictatorship of 1967, he co-founded the resistance organization "Democratic Defense" and was imprisoned for 5.5 years. From 1974 to 1990, he published numerous articles in the newspapers "Eleftherotypia," "Proti," and "Ethnos." He passed away on February 13, 2018, at the age of 91.
