Manolis A. Anagnostakis

Manolis Anagnostakis (1925-2005) was born in Thessaloniki. He studied medicine and specialized in radiology in Vienna (1955-1956). He practiced as a radiologist in Thessaloniki and relocated to Athens in 1978. Due to his political activities in the student movement, he was imprisoned from 1948 to 1951, and in 1949, he was sentenced to death by a special military court. He made his literary debut at a young age during the Occupation, contributing to the magazine "Piraeus Letters" (1942) and the student magazine "Start" (1944), where he also served as editor-in-chief from issue 1 (February 15, 1944) to issues 11-12 (October 1 and 15, 1944). He published poems and critical notes in various magazines and was a frequent contributor to the newspaper "Avgi," writing on literary and political topics. He published the magazine "Critique" (Thessaloniki, 1959-1961) and was a member of the editorial team for "Eighteen Texts" (1970), "New Texts," and the magazine "The Continuation" (1973). He wrote poetry, critical texts, and essays, including: "Seasons," 1945, "Seasons 2," 1948, "Seasons 3," 1951, "The Continuation," 1954, "The Poems 1941-1956" (a collected edition of the first four poetry collections, along with "Parentheses" and "The Continuation 2"), 1956, "The Continuation 3," 1962, "For and Against," 1965, "The Poems," 1971 (a collected edition of all previous poetry collections, including "The Target," part of which was included in "Eighteen Texts"), "Non-Dogmatic, Articles and Notes," 1978, "The Margin '68-'69," 1979, "Manousos Fasssis: Child Muse," 1980, "P.S.," 1992, "The Supplementary," 1985, "Manousos Fasssis: The Downhill," 1986, "The Poet Manousos Fasssis. His Life and Work. A First Attempt at Critical Approach," 1987, "The Low Voice. The Lyrics of Another Era in the Old Rhythms - A Personal Anthology by Manolis Anagnostakis," 1990. His poems have been translated into English, French, German, and Italian, and have been set to music by Mikis Theodorakis, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Angelique Ionatos, and Michalis Grigoriou. He passed away at the age of 80 in Athens, in the early hours of Thursday, June 23, 2005.
