Jeffrey Eugenides

Jeffrey Eugenides was born on March 8, 1960, in Detroit, Michigan, to parents who hailed from Bursa in Asia Minor. He studied English and American literature and philology, as well as creative writing, at Brown and Stanford Universities. His first novel, "The Virgin Suicides," was published in 1993 and was adapted into a film in 1999, directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, Kathleen Turner, and James Woods. The book has been translated into many languages. His second novel, "Middlesex," published in 2003, received critical acclaim and won the Pulitzer Prize. It was also shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and the Prix Médicis in France. "The Marriage Plot" (2011) was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. This was followed by the short story collection "Fresh Complaint" (2017). His short stories have been published in magazines and anthologies such as "The New Yorker," "The Paris Review," "The Yale Review," "Granta," and "Best American Short Stories." In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, he has also been awarded the Whiting Writer's Award and the Harold D. Vursell Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2014, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Between 1999 and 2004, he lived in Berlin with his wife, Karen Yamauchi, and their daughter, as part of a residency and writing fellowship. Since 2007, he has lived in Princeton, where he taught creative writing at the university. He is currently a professor of creative writing at the Peter B. Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton.
