Aikaterini Polymerou - Kamilaki

Aikaterini Polymerou-Kamilaki was born in Tsagarada, Pelion, in 1950. In 1972, she graduated from the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens, specializing in Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. In 1990, she earned her Ph.D. from the same institution, with her dissertation titled "Modern Greek Metrology: Traditional Measures and Weights, 19th-20th Century." Since 1974, she has been a contributor to the Research Centre for Greek Folklore of the Academy of Athens, becoming a Researcher in 1992. Her responsibilities and interests at the Centre have led her to conduct dedicated research missions for the field study and examination of folk culture in Thessaly, Western Macedonia, and Crete. She was elected Director of the Centre from 1994-1995 and 1997-2000, a position she holds to this day. Dr. Polymerou-Kamilaki has delivered numerous scientific presentations at conferences, lectures, and talks. She has overseen research projects and organized conferences, exhibitions, scientific folklore museums, and collections. Additionally, she has published standalone works on folklore, book reviews, and articles in journals and newspapers, edited publications, and participated in radio and television programs. Her scientific interests include material culture, traditional technology, and folk theater. From 1990 to 1993, she was a regular member of the Governing Committee of the University of Thessaly, responsible for its pedagogical departments, and served on various committees. In 1993, she was elected Lecturer of Folklore in the Department of Philology at the University of Athens. She is the Vice President of the Hellenic Folklore Society and a regular member of the Synodal Committee of the Academy of Ecclesiastical Arts of the Church of Greece. She is also the President of the Historical and Folklore Society of Thessalians (a board member since 1972 and General Secretary from 1981 to 1996). Additionally, she has been a member of the Verein für Volkskunde in Vienna since 1983 and a member of the permanent three-member Governing Committee of the Municipal Museum of Milies, Pelion, representing the Hellenic Folklore Society since 1989.
