Étienne Gilson

Étienne Gilson (1884-1978) was born and educated in Paris. He taught at various universities, including the Sorbonne and Harvard, and later held the chair of medieval philosophy at the Collège de France. He was the founder of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto. In 1946, he was elected a member of the French Academy. He is widely recognized as the greatest historian of medieval philosophy of the 20th century.
