Ioannis S. Koliopoulos

Giannis S. Koliopoulos is a professor of modern history at the Faculty of Philosophy of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He also serves as the vice president of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Balkan Studies and is a member of the scientific committee of the Center for Macedonian History and Documentation (KEMIT) at the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle. His major works include: "Greece and the British Connection, 1935-1941" (1977), (Greek translation: "The Metaxas Dictatorship and the War of '40", 2005), "The Brigands of Central Greece in the Mid-19th Century" (2005), "Brigands with a Cause: Brigandage and Irredentism in Modern Greece 1821-1912" (1987), "Looting of Minds: The Macedonian Issue during the Occupation and the Civil War 1941-1949", 2 volumes (1994), "Beyond Greece and the 'Other' Greeks: The Modern Greek Nation and the Multilingual Christian Co-inhabitants, 1800-1912" (2003), "Beyond Greece and the 'Other' Greeks" (2003). He has been honored with the Steven Runciman Award (1987) and the Academy of Athens Award (1994). His current research interests include the introduction of Western European institutions in Greece from the 18th century to the present day and the northern cultural and ethnological boundaries of Greeks in modern times.
