Alexis Tsipras
Alexis Tsipras is a Greek politician. He was born in Athens on July 28, 1974, and is the first political leader to be born after the restoration of democracy in Greece. He became politically active during his school and university years, participating in left-wing organizations. In 2006, he was a candidate for Mayor of Athens with the support of the Coalition of the Left of Movements and Ecology (SYN). At the 5th Congress of SYN in February 2008, he was elected president with 70% of the vote. In the 2009 elections, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the first time with the Coalition of the Radical Left, an alliance in which SYN participated, representing Athens A, and subsequently became president of the SYRIZA parliamentary group. In the 2012 elections, SYRIZA-EKM became the second largest party, and he became the leader of the official opposition. In the parliamentary elections of January 2015, SYRIZA emerged as the leading party. The following morning, Tsipras met with Panos Kammenos, president of the Independent Greeks, who announced his intention to cooperate in forming a government. That same day, Tsipras met with the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Ieronymos II, and then with the President of the Republic, Karolos Papoulias, who gave him the mandate to form a government and swore him in as Prime Minister. After the defeat of the Coalition of the Radical Left – Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras announced at Zappeion on June 29, 2023, that he was resigning as party president and would not seek the leadership again in the internal party elections, in order to initiate “a process of deep renewal and refoundation” of the party, which he interpreted as a consequence of the assessment of the popular vote. On October 6, 2025, Alexis Tsipras submitted his resignation as a Member of Parliament for SYRIZA.
