Fotios CHrysanthopoulos

Chrysanthopoulos, Fotios or Fotakos (1798-1878). A fighter of the 1821 Greek War of Independence, aide-de-camp to Theodoros Kolokotronis, and memoirist. His father was the priest Papa-Giannakis, which is why his siblings were named Papagiannakopouloi. He was born in Magouliana, Gortynia. During the time when the Filiki Eteria (Society of Friends) was gaining strength, he was in Russia working as a commercial employee. He was initiated into the Society and traveled to Lagkadia, Gortynia to meet Kanellos Deligiannis. At the outbreak of the Revolution, he was outside Tripoli with Deligiannis. Kolokotronis appointed him as the first captain of the company he initially founded in the village of Piana, Tripoli. During the years of Kapodistrias, he was a major, and in the era of King Otto, he was appointed as a forest supervisor. His memoirs are a valuable historical source, as being Kolokotronis' aide-de-camp gave him the opportunity to know people and events intimately. He also wrote the Life of Papaflessas and the Lives of Peloponnesian Men.
