Description

"Underground Sky" is the third novel by Sotis Triantafyllou, first published in 1998 by Polis Editions. It tells the story of the Greek-American community in an industrial town in Indiana and the adventure of young Billy Morrow (formerly Moropoulos), who tries to free himself from the identity of a second-generation immigrant: Billy lives an American life and an American experience; the love for car races; the longing for wandering; the jazz of Wes Montgomery; the books about the conquest of the West; the love for a sick girl named Lucia who lives in a trailer park.

"Underground Sky" is the chronicle of a wandering and a defeat; a novel inspired by immigration chronicles and by "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck and "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald; an American novel written in Greek.

In the neighborhood, in South Bend, Indiana, Billy Morrow was called Dounts. Dounts' story begins when his parents came from Greece to the United States to work in the Studebaker automobile industry, when South Bend was full of factories. And it continues with the jazz of Wes Montgomery, with old cars and books about Native Americans, gold prospectors, and the endless sky of the West.

Dounts grows up alongside his friend Tony - who plays with cards and guns - and his cousin Telly, who aspires to become an entrepreneur. Together, they spend nights at provincial dance halls, drive on the highways leading to Indianapolis, Chicago, and the races of "modified" cars. Billy, Tony, and Telly are waiting for the future to happen, and when it does, they are unprepared - each in their own way; no one can help them.

When Dounts meets Lucia, the world lights up; it becomes a majestic place: the two of them travel towards California in search of the sun and the ocean. But on the road, sorrow, illness, and death await them: an evil star follows them; the boundless, protective sky that Billy "Dounts" Morrow seeks moves away along with the horizon.
