Saul Friedlander is considered one of the most important historians of Nazism and the Holocaust. His seminal work "Nazi Germany and the Jews" is also available from Polis editions. In this book, a product of a series of fascinating interviews with journalist Stefan Bou, he attempts with admirable clarity and critical acumen to present his thoughts on the history and memory of Nazism and the Shoah, on how one can speak about the unspeakable evil, and on the historiographical and political controversies surrounding these issues, in which he actively participated, discussing the work, among others, of Hannah Arendt, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Raoul Hilberg, and Claude Lanzmann. Regarding the issue of the genocide of the Jews, he argues that we should overcome both the need for oblivion and the disposition for excessive memory. At the same time, he opposes both Martin Walser, who claimed that Germany has paid enough for all this and that it is time to turn the page, and Ernst Nolte, who, considering Nazism as a response to communism, condemned the latter in order to absolve the former. Friedlander, through his work in general and this book in particular, highlights the need for an ethical stance and political vigilance in the face of the Nazi phenomenon.
