Chios in the 5th century BC was a rich and powerful military force in the eastern Aegean.
For sixty-six continuous years (478-412 BC) it remained a faithful ally of the Athenians and the reasons
were many: the protection provided to them by Athens from the conquering aspirations of the Persians, its privileged position within the alliance, the promotion of economic interests from the Athenian regime, the stability of the Chian political system and the increasing material prosperity.
After the destruction of the Athenians in Sicily, the Chians, seeing that these reasons were disappearing and feeling that they were now being exploited by the Athenians, decided to revolt and join the new emerging power, Sparta. They also tried to incite as many cities as possible to revolt in order to confront the Athenians with many allies.
However, they underestimated the mental endurance of the Athenian people, who despite adverse conditions in terms of manpower and economic resources, managed to withstand for another nine years. The Chians realized this when they were besieged by land and sea and their countryside was deserted. The situation worsened when the numerous slaves employed by the Chians in their work began to desert to the Athenians and others roamed the mountains causing great destruction in the countryside.
Based on the historical events mentioned by Thucydides and Plutarch, as well as the mythical story of Drymako, the rebel slave of the Athenian, who drew his information from Nymphodoros the Syracusan, this historical novel was written.
The purpose is to acquaint the reader with a historical period of Chios (412-407 BC), its people, their occupations, customs, traditions, and military events. The description of human characters, emotions, the use of a series of ancient terms, and the chronology of historical events found in the text have been adapted for the needs of the novel. It should be noted that the measurement of space and time is appropriately adjusted for the needs of the text.
