Description

"Night" (1952) and "The Lost Meadow" (1955) were among the first great novels about the occupation and post-occupation period. In "Night," the protagonist, a young soldier from 1940-41, ends up in Athens, where he struggles to escape hunger, experiences the pain and death of his fellow human beings, and encounters the Resistance. His Kafkaesque psyche leads him on a journey, through love, towards consciousness. In "The Lost Meadow," the same protagonist travels to Germany after the Occupation in search of his loved ones, who had been transferred to concentration camps by the Nazis. There, another world opens up before him: the former enemies.
